Cimmerians

Cimmerians
   A nomadic Indo-European people who originally inhabited the region north of the Black Sea. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, sometime in the eighth century B.C. they were displaced by the Scythians, to whom they may have been related. The Cimmerians then migrated into Urartu (Armenia), where they settled in an area the Assyrians called Gamir. (The Assyrians called the Cimmerians the Gimirri, and the Old Testament referstothemastheGomer.)Itappears that the Cimmerians would have tried to conquer Mesopotamia next; however, the Assyrian king Sargon II defeated them in 705 B.C. (He died in the battle.) The Cimmerians then invaded Anatolia, taking over the region later known as Phrygia. After an unsuccessful attempt at conquering the kingdom of Lydia in western Anatolia, they more or less disappeared from the historical record.
